A voyage to the shades of Croatia (08/09/2009)
In The Puppeteer and the She Devil Johan de Boose goes in search of the ideals and taboos of Croatia. His journey begins in enchanting Dubrovnik, in the south, and takes him through innumerable islands and mediaeval towns to Vokovar, in the northeast. He touches the still sensitive nerves of Europe and listens to everyone he meets. On his way, he digs deep into the history of Southeast Europe. The result is a story about the borders of Croatia and their relativity. Attention to politics and war are important, but subordinate to empathy for the innocent victims, their sentiments and resentments. Amongst those victims are the puppeteer and the she-devil. The puppeteer represents illusion and ideals, but also for irony and history. The she-devil is the breaker of taboos, who asks the awkward questions. Read sample translation in English
